PLACE OF BIRTH:
There is some question as to Stevens Goold’s place of birth being in Thetford, Orange County, Vermont. New Hampshire makes for a more practical place if it can be established.
NEW - From: <mellis2249@aol.com>,
Subject: Possible Stevens Goold birth, Hillsborough, NH 2-12-1769. Stevens Gould, birth 12 Feb 1769, Hopkinton, Hillsborough, N.H, USA, father’s name Moses Gould, mother’s name Ann ( ? ), FHL Film No.: 1000946.
Ancestry World Tree Project: <ancestry.com> This indicating Family Trees has 8 matches for Stevens Gould. This shows Allen Gould & wife Harriet Newell Keyes, his father Stevens Gould [not spelled GOOLD as we have come to know him] and Stevens GOOLD's apparent father by the same name of Stevens Gould. Watch out for all the speculation below! ede.
BEYOND SPECULATION WE FIND ONLY AN END OF THE ROAD FOR STEVENS GOOLD. WE FIND HE IS SUPPOSED TO HAVE BEEN BORN IN THETFORD, ORANGE COUNTY, VERMONT, ON 1 FEBRARY 1769 BUT ANYTHING PRIOR TO THIS TIME IS LIKE HAVING HAD A BRICK WALL OR BARRIER THROWN UP TO THE PAST. One should now return to Thetford, Vermont and begin the task of going through land, court and any other miscelleanous records available for a possible clue to the parentage of Stevens GOOLD.
Cemetery Marker

In accordance to marker located in small old cemetery (TC old D-8), Northwest part of Thetford Center, Vermont. It is an extremely interesting marker from standpoint of workmanship and condition. Made from slab of dark granite or slate with finished edges ground to perfection. Other markers of same material have chipped and cracked tops. This due to poor grinding allowing winter moisture to freeze in top edges causing chipping and flaking. If marker was placed immediately following death of Stevens Goold it would indicate being 170 years old as of 2009. This marker shows willow, urn and sunbursts at top. The center section has four fan-shaped motifs and perfect circle containing detailed information of deceased. There is further inscriptions within oblong sections bottom of marker. A photo of this marker is found in the Goold or Gould Genealogy hard copy, by Edward D. Ellis.

He is listed with one house, one barn, from 14 to 27 acres of improved land, and a middling but substantial property valuation. A couple of lists show 1 horse and 1 cow."
The birth of Lydia Lutherah Goold states father as Capt. Stevens & Lydia. We have been unable to locate any other reference as to title of Captain relative to Stevens Goold. Is this of the militia or involved with ships?
