Col. James Madison 7 Ellis was a farmer and breeder of SpanishMerino sheep and engaged in the wool, hide, tanning, and leather trade. He was a trustee of the Syracuse Savings Bank and president of the Mechanics Bank. He served as Adjutant, Major and Colonel of the 147th Regiment, 27 Brigade, and 18th Division of New York State Infantry Militia until 29 February 1839. He was a member of the May Memorial Church.
