William 5 Ellis was a Revolutionary War soldier serving in the Continental Army from April 1777 until Jan 1780. He served in Capt. Joshua Eddy's company, Col. Gamelial Bradford's regiment and in Capt. Lincoln's company, Col. Brandford's regiment. After the war he settled in Woodstock, Vermont. He is listed in the 1790 census as the head of a Woodstock family of one male over 16, two under 16 and four females. Their children are listed in the Ransom Genealogy.
William Ellis and Dorothy Tuttle are reported to have had 12 children.
