He came to Traverse City in 1873 with his parents. Martin and Florence lived on one of the Ellis farms just south of Traverse City, adjacent to the farm operated by his brother Frank. Following their divorce Martin ran a pawn shop on Union Street and Florence ran an ice cream parlor next door.
