William Avery 10 Ellis graduated from Rhode Island State College with a B.S. degree in 1936. He graduated from Jefferson Medical College, Philadelphia, PA in 1940 with his medical degree. He interned at St. Francis Hospital, Hartford, CT from July 1940 to July 1941.
From July 1941 to July 1942 he held a Teaching Fellowship in Pathology, Georgetown School of Medicine, Washington, D.C. During this period he was Night Resident in Traumatic Surgery at Casuality Hospital Washingtn, D.C.
From July 1942 to July 1944 he was Assistant Resident in Surgery, North Carolina Baptist Hospital, Winston Salem, N.C. Concurrently, he was Instructor in Surgery at Boman Gray School of Medicine, Winston Salem.
From July 1944 to July 1945 he was Chief Resident in Surgery, Mary Hitchcock, Memorial Hospital, Hanover, N.H. At the same time he was Instructor in Anatomy, Darthmouth Medical School and Member of Hitchcock Clinic, continuing until December 1947.
From January 1947 until December he was Attending Surgeon, Veterans Hospital, White River Junction, VT.
In 1946 he was named Diplomate of American Board of Surgery. He was in practice of General and Thoratic Surgery, St. Francis Hospital, Hartford, CT from January 1948 to August 1982. He was Chief of Staff 1977 to 1978; Emeritus 1982 to 1988.
He was engaged in office practice, minor surgery and Peer Review, Aug 1982 to Dec 1988.
He was Assistant Clinical Professor, University of Connecticut School of Medicine, Department of Surgery, 1978-1988.
In civic affairs he was Citizen Commissioner, State of Connecticut. Fisha nd Game Department 1961-1971; Chairman 1964 and 1970. He was founder of the Limestone Trout Club, East Canaan, Ct. 1957; Owner 1957 to 1978. He belongs to the Massachusetts Society of Mayflower Descendants. He won his Eagle Scout Badge in 1930.
