William and his only son, Samuel Stow, had gone to Illinois to look for a new place to live. William was taken with a virulent fever and died. In those days it was not possible to move human remains over such a great distance, so Samuel buried his father in Quincy. Sarah lived in the home where William had taken her as a bride until a year before her death when she went to live with her daughter, Eveline Ellis Melvin, inVermontville, New York.
