Item 1.Deacon Freeman Keyes at the age of sixteen, in the year 1823, left his home in Vershire, and began his business career as a clerk in the firm of Messrs. Reed and Goold in Newbury, Vermont. On the death of Mr. Goold (family changed to Gould) in 1829, he became a partner in the firm, of which he continued a member under different names during life, most of the time in company with his brothers and son. He married, November 1, 1831, Emmeline C. Daughter of Doctor Calvin and Sally (Parker) Jewett of St. Johnsbury, Vermont. Three weeks after this event they connected themselves with the Congregational church of Newbury, Vermont, of which he continued a leading and active member for forty years, and deacon for the last eighteen years of his life. He was a constant and generous giver to all benevolent societies and enterprises of the day, was active in the cause of Temperance and president of the County Society. The "Howard Mission" and "Burlington Home" were much in his heart and many of the poor will regret his loss.
He Was superintendent of the Sabbath School for almost twenty-five years. In May, 1871, Deacon Freeman Keyes left home for a journey to Kansas and other points of the West, in company with his son Edward and others and died in Chicago, June 11, 1871. Mrs Keyes died June 20, 1878.
