Misc. Notes
Richard Burt of Tauton, Massachusetts.

Richard Burt the founder of this family settled in Taunton, Massachusetts and one of the first to make a purchase there in 1637. He engaged in Ironwork in the new Bloomerie. These works were set up in 1652 on the great highway, between Taunton and Raynam Center where the "Taunton Iron Works", James Leonard and Henry his brother were the first owners of these forges, Capt. Thomas Leonard the eldest son of James, was the next to won the forges. He came with his father from Ponty pool Monmouthshire, England in 1648, being then a small boy. He was the founder of distinguished families. The Norton Leonards were his descendants. He was Justice of the Peace from 1684-1713, was also a Physician and a military man.

An account of his family is in the Genealogical, Register Vol. 13, page 251 and 1884, for record of Taunton Iron Works.

History of Taunton, Mass., on page 396 gives the names of those in the Expedition of Little Compton, 1691, King Williams War. In those are the following.

'John Burt, 7 days, by horse.
Joseph Burt, is in the list of soldiers pressed in July, 1692, in the King Williams War.'

History of Taunton, Massachusetts, 1637 - 1893. "The Forty Six Purchasers." Page 34-45.

Richard Burt., a first settler, was probably over sixty in 1643, as his ;name does not appear in the list of those subject to military duty. He must have died before 1647, for in that year his Minor son, Richard, chose his uncle James Burt, his guardian and the court confirmed the choice. The son took the oath of fidelity in 1657, was constable in 1667, and receiver of excise. The will of the son, bearing the date of Sept. 7, 1685, in which he calls himself fifty-six years old, makes mention of son Abel, Richard, Joseph, Ebenezer, Ephraim, daughters Mary and Abigail; appointing his wife Charity, executrix. The will was approved October 29, 1685. His home lands were at the "Ware," and between the Ware and the farms.

Richard and a brother James who early appeared at Taunton, although not among the first purchasers. He was a surveyor of highways in 1645 and again in 1654. He took oath of fidelity in 1657. In 1659 his name appears on the list as entitled to divisions of land and on that of 1675 as claiming on his own rights. Mr James H. Dean, who has bestowed much time and thought on the first settlers, is our authority for the statement that his home lands were on the westerly side of the Great River, and that his descendants still own lands in that vicinity. His will of March 2, 1681 gives to his eldest son James his Dwellinghhouse and six Acres of Land lying between and brook called Mr. Browne's brook on the southwest side of the Cartway going to Thomas Lincoln's house, called Thomas Lincoln's Carway, and a gore of land lying by the three Mile River below the lower falls, in a place called the falls Plain. He also had a son Thomas.

There are some questions as to Richard Burt's date of birth and those of his children.

Richard Burt was amoung the original 46 purchasers of a strip of land named Taunton, from the Plymouth Colony on 19 June 1740 (Called the Tetiquet purchase).
