Joseph 5 Ellis was a Revolutionary soldier serving as a private in Capt. Elijah Smalley's company, Maj. Zenas Winslow's regiment in September 1778. He is listed as the head of a Harwich family of three males over 16, one under 16, one female and one other person. He removed to Springfield, Vermont about 1796-97, joining his son Ziba, and bought a large farm reported to have been the Christopher Ellis place. Ziba sold out to his father about 1806 and moved to Westhersfield, Vermont. Joseph lived on that farm until his death.

ECN editor question: Who was the Christopher Ellis whose land was taken over or settled or purchased by Joseph Ellis and family in Springfield, Vt., 1797? Could this have been the Christopher Ellis for whom Col. Harry H. Ellis was searching for so many years?
