REFERENCE STORY’s and the search for:
According to a letter dated November 17, 1900, written by Mary W. (Stiles) Ellis, mother of Elmer. It expresses that Elmer and his wife Mary left the farm because she did not want to live in the Woods, after having been born in the City of New York. Elmer and his wife are supposed to have gone to New York city, but had little or no contact with his parents after that. [Notice Elmer’s mother referr’s to his wife as Mary.]

Certificate and Record of Death. The copy of death certificate for Elmer Orville Ellis, issued by Bureau of Vital Records, Department of Health, City of New York, N.Y., has two errors. 1st: It shows fathers name as George Ellis (his brothers name) when it should be Ebenizer Burt Ellis. 2nd: It has mothers name looking like Mary Wardsyle when it should be Mary Ward Stiles. Note address of deceased shown as 414 West 42nd St. and burial as Linden Hill Cemetery.

New York City and Linden Hill Cemetery visits:
Edward D. Ellis and Kathleen A. Ellis did take a drive by the 414 West 42nd St. address and visited the Linden Hill Cemetery during one of our genealogical trips east. We found the exact location, reviewed and received copies of grave card records indicating three persons had been buried in the same grave. The Linden Hill M.E. Cemetery record cards indicate the following grave openings:
1st. on Feb. 17, 1910, for burial of Helen A. Davis, believe this to be mother of Helen J. Davies.
2nd. on Feb. 16, 1911, for Elmer Orville Ellis, husband of Helen J. Davies.
3rd. on July 16, 1915, forTheodore Hudgins, not identified as part of family.
This brings up the name spelling of Helen A. DAVIS and that of Helen J. DAVIES with variations. Believe the Cemetery record has been recorded incorrectly with no one knowing the difference taking note or requesting a correction.

Jennie M. (Ellis) Cheney speaks of Walter H. Cheney having gone to the Public Library and looking in the New York City Directory for 1915, and not seeing an Elmer O. Ellis in it. There was a long list of George Ellis's though. He had said that, he thought, he was in the 1909 directory.
