Sources & Information:
George Henry Ellsworth was a farmer by trade.
Wilhelmina Steele Conklin, daughter of Moses Steele and Louise Rowh or Rowe.
The following information about George Henry Ellsworth and family was furnished by Dorothy Etta Beneway Buck, his granddaughter and daughter of Etta M. Conklin Ellsworth Beneway:
"Because of George's health, it was necessary for him to leave his work for a healthier atmosphere. He homesteaded 80 acres of solid woods, built a log cabin first from the land and eventually cleared all 80 acres and purchased an additional 80 besides his farm. My grandfather died at age 54 by drowning in the same river that their daughter, Beatrice, drowned at age 16."
He died on 21 July 1918 by accidental drowning in Maple Ridge, Michigan. The Alpena County Clerk's record of death, Book C, Page 124, No. 7 for George Henry Ellsworth, indicates his father's name as Henry Ellsworth. On a visit with Christopher George Ellsworth, by Edward D. Ellis, at his farm on 10 August 1961, he stated that this data was incorrect--that George Henry Ellsworth's father was Emanuel Ellsworth. christopher remembered Emanuel Ellsworth visiting from St Clair, Michigan and has pictures of Emanuel and his wife, Mary Himes.
Wilhelmina "Minnie" Steel Conklin had two children by a previous marriage:
[1] ALBERT CHARLES CONKLIN, born 19 May 1885, in St Clair, Michigan.
[2] ETTA "Ettie" M. CONKLIN, born 27 November 1882, in Lapeer, Michigan.
Destination of these two children:
[1] Bert Conklin was adopted by Robert Henry Ellsworth who was George Henry Ellsworth's uncle. Robert was a brother of George's father, Emanuel Ellsworth. Albert Charles Conklin Ellsworth is is further shown in this record.
[2] Ettie was adopted by George Henry Ellsworth and is listed as Etta M. Conklin Ellsworth, as his first child, with her descendents carried forward from that point.
Thus, here we have a full brother and sister as listed in two separate places in this manuscript because they were adopted by two different Ellsworth relatives.
To further explain this situation, Ettie's daughter, Dorothy Etta Buck sent the following:
"Albert was adopted by Robert Henry Ellsworth, but my mother stayed with her mother Wilhelmina. She was 3 years old and Albert 19 months when it became necessary to divorce Conklin. Wilhelmina later married George Ellsworth who raised and adopted my mother, Etta M. Actually there is no Ellsworth blood relationship in my mother or her children, but grandma and grandpa Ellsworth were very close to our family, in fact closer than to his own natural children."
