Emanuel Edward Ellsworth reported as a twin brother of Samuel Nathaniel Ellsworth.
TRAVELS ON - DECEMBER 3, 1981.
To Set the tone for further excursion into Ellsworth Family Genealogy, had been reading Probate data, in "The Roots and Genealogy of Israel B. Ellsworth and Mary Ann Gage" by Donna Ellsworth Ward, regarding the settlement of the Estate of Israel B. Ellsworth that indicated his wife Mary Ann Ellsworth as the principal. Had always wondered where Israel B. Elsworth and Emanuel Ellsworth were buried. The Probate immediately following Israel B. Elsworth death, on 24 September 1854, in St Clair Township, indicates a description of property owned by him and the final distribution of this property by his wife Mary Ann Ellsworth. Having this description, then obtained a map of the St Clair Township area, that indicated the starting point of sections which helped my son Michael Edward Ellis, a commercial and residential appraiser, plot out the exact location of the Ellsworth farm. Having done this inscribed two circles of one and two mile radius and said they either had to be buried on the farm or in a near by cemetery.
So early on the morning of this date Florine V.(Ellsworth) Hartman, Kathleen Annabelle (Hartman) Ellis and myself left Royal Oak, Michigan for the trip to St Clair, Michigan. On arriving went to the City Hall, St Clair, looking for a further plat map for St Clair Township. They did not have one and indicated they would have to be obtained from the County Offices in Port Huron. They did however show me on my map where the Township office was located in the triangle intersection of Bartlett, Bowman and Newman Roads, this being about one mile from the family farm location. This is where we were able to get another copy of Death Certificate for Emanuel Ellsworth, Reg. No. 14. This also helped to clarify the parentage of Emanuel Ellsworth since the original received sometime ago from St Clair County records indicted his father as Gerald Elsworth (could never figure this out) and mother Mary A. Gage were both born in New York. The Township record indicated Emanuel's father as Israel Elsworth born in New York and mother Mary A. Gage born in Canada plus the informant as Mary Elsworth. This is much more acceptable record. The township office does not have information prior to 1900. One must pursue vigorously but softly in getting information. This resulted in a box being brought out from a back room that contained the above Registered No. 14 for Emanuel Ellsworth. This is also where the information regarding the cemetery on Yankee Road was obtained. There are two other country cemeteries, the area, the first is also on Yankee Road about 2 miles east of the farm, on the north side of road between Range and Pug Roads. This is a Catholic cemetery. The second is located in Section 17 on Rattle Run Road approximately three miles north west of the farm. We also went looking for Elsie (King) Webb, a short distance north of the Township office at 1373 Bartlett Road. Florine Violet (Ellsworth) Hartman having last visited this home when she was a little girl. The house probably has all the original furnishings, plus, other family hand me downs. Florine and Kathleen were amazed to say the least! Did not stay here for long as Elsie Webb had her coat on and headed for a Doctor's appointment with a neighbor girl.
We left there heading for the cemetery located on the north side of Yankee Road, just west of the Bowman intersection which is known as Bowman Road Cemetery and Beckwith Cemetery. In talking with Fred Welser, former Township Clerk, 5650 Newman Rd., St Clair Township, St Clair, Michigan, he indicted the cemetery was originally established by the Township for those Township persons needing burial facilities. There was no cost for lots and there were no records kept of those buried in this cemetery. The only care given was by interested individuals and the grass being periodically cut by the Township. There are less and less persons who know or are concerned with its maintenance, thus is becoming very run down. He indicated the cemetery has not been used for some time and probably will not be used in the future. The Township office located a rough diagram of the cemetery indicating those buried and having markers, however, if there were others there they have no record. See copy of cemetery detail indicating those in the section that includes Emanuel Ellsworth.
The head stone for Emanuel Ellsworth and Edna Gladys Orr located in this cemetery are of a recent date. Elsie King Webb knew that Emanuel Ellsworth had a stone but did not know where it came from. Fred Welser indicted it was placed there by one of the Orr family and gave me Kenneth Emanuel Orr's address, 3333 Ravenswoods, Marysville, Michigan, as one to contact regarding this cemetery. Another person to look up was a Mrs. Frank "Jean" Tabor, 1413 N. River Rd., St Clair, Michigan, Telephone 329-2491, who is involved with the Historical Museum, 308 S. Fourth St., St Clair, Michigan, Telephone 329-7729.
Fred Welser has a brother living on Bowman Rd., who says the property he owns was once owned by a Leo Ellsworth. Do not know of the name Leo Ellsworth, however, he has an old Abstract of title showing ownership from its know beginning. He has my address and was going to look through it to see if other Ellsworth's ever owned the property.

USE OF NAMES - ELSWORTH and/or ELLSWORTH, HIMES and/or HINES.
Source Information: < www.familysearch.org > IGI Record, Mary HINES, F, born ABT 1835, St Claire, St Clair, Michigan, married Emanuel ELLSWORTH, Film Number 170680, Page Number 223, Reference No. 5830. IGI Record, Mary HINES, F, married Emanuel ELSWORTH, 21 December 1856, St Clair, Mi., Batch No. M518781. The spelling of ST CLAIR, Michigan is the correct spelling for city.
The intermittent and inconsistent spelling of sir name, covering major events, is continually being used in various ways by members of this family.
We continue to find speculative information that keeps showing up regarding Mary Ann Hines (Himes) as born January 25, 1838 in Grosse Point now Roseville, Michigan or Germany of Adam Hines (Himes) and unknown mother. In the History of St. Clair County, Michigan, by A. T. Andres & Co., it stated that Mary Hines was from Detroit. The other source stating she was born in Grosse Pointe now Roseville, Michigan, are possible but it is also reported by Florine V. Ellsworth Hartman that Mary Ann Hines (Himes) Ellsworth came from Germany, but that she would never admit this to be the case. It was always, "Just Detroit". Arnold Orr, grandson of Emanuel Ellsworth also confirmed this fact shortly before his death. He stated, "Mary Himes was b. January 25, 1838 in Germany. Her father Adam Himes, was also born in Germany and came to Detroit, Michigan to live." Arnold Orr being raised by Emanuel and Mary Hines Ellsworth.
Arnold Orr was raised by Emanuel Ellsworth and always thought Emanuel's name was actually Samuel Emanuel Ellsworth, but that he always used the name Emanuel to avoid confusion with Samuel Nathaniel Ellsworth. In the 1860 census records for St. Clair, Michigan, Emanuel was listed as "Edward Elsworth".
In MARRIAGE CERTIFICATES 1839 to 1857 St Clair County, Michigan, page 509.
Emanuel Elsworth to Mary Ann Himes, Recorded January 17, 1857, T. C. Owen.
"I hereby certify that on the 21st day of December AD 1856, Emanuel Elsworth aged 21 years and Mary Hines aged Nineteen years both of St Clair, St Clair County and State of Michigan were married by me in the presence of Lucy M. Arnold, Harriet Eastwood W.T. Given under my hand the 21st day of December AD 1856 at St Clair."

JULY 30, 1860, CENSUS, lists the following:
Edward Elsworth, age 23, male, Occupation Farmer, Real Estate Value $600.00, where born Canada. Mary Elsworth, age 22, female, born Michigan. Christopher Elsworth, age 2 Years, male, born Michigan. George Elsworth, age 3 months, male, born Michigan.
LAND RECORDS, Orion Township, Oakland County, Michigan, shows a E. Ellsworth, with 60 acres in S.W. corner of Section 30. May involve Edward Elsworth shown above.
On August 27, 1864, Emanuel bought the West part of east half of NW Quarter of section 26, T5, North of Range 16 East from his mother, Mary Ann Gage Elsworth, for $400.00 in St. Clair, Michigan. This parcel consisted of 50 acres. This farm eventually growing to 130 acres. Some of this may have come from other property owned by his mother since she had had 156 acres adjacent to his. In 1864, he was listed as residing in St. Clair, Michigan.
Emanuel witnessed his younger sister's marriage, Rosetta Ellsworth to Christopher F. Downing on July 4, 1871. His residence was listed as St. Clair, Michigan.
We have a submitter (Lois Jane Wolz, 8527-A-Titchfield CT., St Louis, MO, 63123-1245) to <www.familysearch.org> having name problem with Ida Isabelle Ellsworth and Lester William Ellsworth relationship who are actually 1st cousins. Also the name spelling of Aylworth, Aylsworth, Elsworth to Ellsworth through the generations from Arthur Aylworth down to Lester William Ellsworth and Ida Isabelle Ellsworth. There is also the intermittent use or spelling of Elsworth and/or Ellsworth, the use of one l or two ll's in the name. This submitter has used a middle name for Emanuel Ellsworth as Emanuel Edward Ellsworth.
The CERTIFIED COPY of RECORD of DEATH, No. 328-4, State of Michigan, County of St. Clair, Emanuel Elsworth or Emanuel Ellsworth, died 14 June 1913, @ 76 years 6 months 13 days, St. Clair, Michigan. Also indicates birth place as Canada, occupation farmer, father as Gerald Elsworth and Mother as Mary A. Gage, with both parents being born in New York. The usage of the name GERALD ELSWORTH above makes for confusion.
The name of Mary A. Gage also ties to the records of John Ellsworth of Ossineke and Alpena, Michigan who is the brother of Emanuel Ellsworth. The Certified Copy of Record of Marriage, Record No. 1896, State of Michigan, County of Alpena, shows John Ellsworth as married to Mary A. Griffin Elliott on 23 July 1900. Also that John Ellsworth parents were Israel Ellsworth and Mary A. Gage and that both were born in Canada.
This is in conflict with information in the Emanuel Ellsworth, Record of Death, No. 328-4, relative to his parentage and their place of birth, The transition of this family from Rhode Island to New York to Canada and specifically Prince Edward County, Ontario, Canada, is especially frustrating due to apparent inaccurate reporting by members of this family.

"Ninety-Three Year Old Lady lays Down Her Earthly Cares".
"One of the oldest, if not the oldest residents of this country passed to the beyond the last of last week, when Mrs. Mary Ellsworth gave up life's cares. Mrs Ellsworth passed away on March 14, at the home of her grandson, Guy Ellsworth, in Albert Township. She had been making her home with her daughter-in-law, Mrs. Susie Ellsworth, for a number of years, but went to the home of her grandson, to stay for a time, during the absence of Mrs. Ellsworth in the southern part of the state. Mrs. Ellsworth, born Mary Himes was born in Detroit, in December 1837, when Detroit was a mere village. Left an orphan at an early age, she accompanied the family who raised her, to St. Clair, where, when 18 years of age, she married Emanuel Ellsworth. Of a family of seven children, but one son, Chas. Ellsworth, survives her. Her husband passed to the "Beyond" some sixteen years ago. She leaves behind her, eighty-seven living descendents. Sunday after noon, a number of friends and neighbors gathered at the home of Guy Ellsworth, and after a fine talk from Rev. Gadd, and the singing of appropriate selections by Mrs. D. W. Wheeler, the Misses Lavina and Olive Wright, accompanied by Rev. Gadd on his violin, her remains were borne to their resting place in the Lewiston cemetery, by the hands of four grandsons. She will live long in the memory of her many grandchildren."
