The Arthur Aylsworth and his descendents from Rhode Island placed a heavy emphasis on the usage of Aylworth and Aylsworth, in the early years of this family in America. Along the way traveled by this family from Rhode Island, New York, Canada and Michigan the usage and spelling of name has been shown as: Aylworth, Aylsworth, Aylesworth, Elsworth, and Ellsworth.

The movement of this family from Rhode Island to New York and Canada, came during a very stressful period of the American Revolution, when individuals were pretty much required to take a stand on being a Loyalist or supporter of the American Colonies. It is obvious that members of this family were lending support to The United Empire Loyalists and there were times when the use or change in name spelling became useful and appropriate. A natural change from Aylsworth to Elsworth to Ellsworth appears to be on a flip flop basis to accomplish an end requirement. The changing of name spelling from time to time did and does create problems with family members and causing confusion in the records.

George Elsworth's father Caleb Elsworth was the first to change usage of Aylsworth to Elsworth with only one L in the name. George Elsworth continuing to use the name as such into his marriage to Nancy Bowerman, on 3 November 1801, Hallowell, Prince Edward County, Ontario, Canada.
