John Austin Stiles, b. 4 September 1819, Stafford, Connecticut, date of death n/k. He is listed as a graduate from the Homeopathic Medical College of Pennsylvania in 1858 at age 39 years.
An E-mail was received from < jwinston@actrix.gen.nz > (Julian Winston) "HMCPA was founded in 1848 as the first homeopathic medical college in the USA. It was merged with Hahnemann Medical College in 1869. Hahnemann continued to teach homeopathy until 1940 or so. The school changed its name to Hahnemann University a few years ago, and last year merged with the Allegheny Health Services group--so the Hahnemann University and Women's Medical College of PA merged to a single school.
The Hahnemann Archives are still extent, but I doubt they would have more information that I can find on Dr. Stiles--since we use the same resources. They do not have a number of "senior theses" in the collection, but these are from the late 1860 through the 1880's--so Stile's work would not be there." JW
Edward D. Ellis, Royal Oak, Michigan, has original photographs of John Austin Stiles as a young man and probably taken early in his medical career. Also have a tintype of him with handwritten information thereon indicating it as Dr. John Styles (note spelling) in San Francisco, California. This picture taken much later in life. We have no knowledge of his ever having married. Perhaps the state of California has something to offer.

Others living at this location are Mary Reed, age 59, Abby Reed, age 23 and Harriet Kingsberry, age 19. Unable to place these persons in the family. This would place John Austin Stiles as we know him to be about 31 in the year 1850. This location would fit as prior to attending the Homeopathic Medical College of Pennsylvania, where he graduated in 1858 @ age 39 yrs.

This would make John Austin Stiles as we know him to be about age 61 in the year 1880. Could this relate to one of the individuals in the old picture reported as on the Ellis Farm. Our MYSTERY picture. This census lists an Edward B. Ellis [believed to be Ebenezer Burt Ellis], age 61; a Mary W. Ellis [believed to be Mary W. [Stiles] Ellis, age 58; a John A. Stiles [believe to be John Austin Stiles].

Since this family is known to have traveled from Ware and Hardwich, Massachusetts to Rindge, N.H., to Brattlebora, Vermont. area. John Austin Stiles and Mary Ward Stiles are brother and sister.
