Item 1. James Tillman Ellis entered military service from Sumner County, Teennessee in the War of 1812. He served in the U. S. Army from 28 Jan 1814 until 23 May 1814 when he was given an honorable discharge. He was given a land warranty for his service in the army. He served as a private under the name of James Tilghman Ellis in the company of Andrew Jackson. The Creek Indians, incited by the British, took up arms against the United States. They massacred the garrison and settlers at Fort Mims. The settlers rose up against them and defeated them in several battles. They continued to give trouble until the spring of 1814 when Andrew Jackson, at the Battle of Horseshoe Bend defeated them with terrible slaughter almost exterminating the entire nation. According to the records James T. Ellis was in the Battle at Hickory Flats and horseshoe Bend.
Item 2.James Tillman Ellis and wife Susannah went to Wilson County, Tennessee to live. The farm was near Laguardo, Tennessee which is directly across the Cumberland River from Gallatin, Tennessee. There was a ferry across the river at that time. Susannah's granddaughter, Margaret C. Ellis Pittman, once said "She talked very Dutchy." In a letter of Samuel C. Ellis writing to home folks while he was visiting in Tennessee in 1881 wrote, "Grandma Suzie can still ride horseback." She was 87 years old at that time. She was living with her son Jesse Jones Ellis and his wife Bettie Ellis. Grandfather James Tillman Ellis died 3 Mar 1887 at the home of his
daughter Mary Ann Ellis Ross. Susannah Ellis died April 1886. They are both buried
near Martha, Tennessee not far from their farm where they spent their married lives.
