Item 1.Josiah Ellis was nine years old when his father died. His mother was executrix of the will under which he inherited a major part of his father's estate. Although he continued to live on his inherited land in Sandwich, he soon began to acquire property in Plymouth County. He enlisted in Capt. Ward Swift's 2nd Sandwich Company, where he served as a sergeant. This is the same company in which his cousin, Elisha Ellis served as an ensign. Josiah and Mary were members of the Sandwich Church where their first six children were baptized. Following the war, and now styled "gentleman" he added to his holdings in the Herring Pond area. In the 1790 Census he was listed as the head of a Sandwich family of one male over 16, five under 16 and five females. His will was dated 26Aug1821 and proved in 1821.
