Mary A. Ellis was born in the Benjamin Stiles home in Stilesburg, Ohio. She lived there until she was two years old then moved with her mother into the Walker Tavern on Old Telegraph Road, about three miles from Berlin Heights, Ohio. Mary and her mother spent two years at the Walker Tavern while her father served in the Union Army in the Civil War.
