Item 1.Edward Sawyer Ellis was born on the family farm, where he resided all his life, engaged in
farming, in which he was very successful, becoming well-to-do. In politics he was a Whig.
He served as deacon in the Gilead Congregational Church for many years previous to his
death, which occured 4 Sept. 1830, four hours from the death of his father. His first wife was
Mercy Rollo of Gilead, who died 28 Feb. 1815, aged thirty, the mother of four children.
