Capt. Joel 3 Ellis is buried in the old Middleborough Cemetery. At the time of is first marriage he was living in Sandwich. He moved to Plymouth and shortly thereafter to Middleborough. The name Capt. Joel Ellis heads a list, dated in 1754, of petitioners of the First Church of Middleborough which sets forth that they were without a minister and asked permission to attend elsewhere. He and his son Thomas were directed to attend the Second Parish Church of Plympton.

Cemetery At The Green, Middleboro, MA, indicates the following on markers; the inscriptions on the remarkably well-preserved stones of Joel and Elizabeth read: "Here lies buried Capt. Joel Ellis who died June 21st 1763 in the 85th year of his age," and "In Memory of Madam Elizabeth Elles wife of Capt. Joel Elles who died April Y 1753 in Y 66th yr. of her age."

Vol. 9, Vital Records of Middleborough, Massachusetts, Volume 9. Elizabeth Ellis the daughter of Joel Ellis & of Elizabeth his wife was born February 5th, 1723/24. Charles Ellis the son of Joel Ellis and of Elizabeth his wife was born June 19th, 1726. Thomas Ellis the son of Joel Ellis & of Elizabeth his wife was born January 1st 1728/29.
