Cemetery AT The Green, Middleboro, MA. Nine members of this family are buried in two rows adjacent to a rock wall which faces the highway two miles from Middleboro. John Ellis, son of Joel and Elizabeth, is buried next to his father. John's headstone has weathered and is not as readable. It does say "68 yr. of his age." According to the book on descendants of the Sandwich, Mass. Ellis family written in 1983 by Col. Next we find Ensign Matthias Ellis, another son of Joel and Elizabeth, and his wife Lucy Bennett. Matthias d. 1 Jan. 1790 "in the 71st yr. of his age." His wife d. 3 Oct. 1804, age 79 years.
One of Capt. Joel's grandchildren and one great-grandchild are buried on the second row.
Perhaps there were others in that row who had no stones.
Capt. Southworth Ellis, was son of Thomas Ellis and grandson of Joel Ellis. He d. 15 Dec. 1840, age 71 yrs 2 mos 27 dys. Next to him is his first wife, Deborah (Hall) Ellis who d. 6 Sept. 1826, age 58 yrs nine mos. (Note: Thomas Ellis family moved to VT pre-1788, and stayed there, all except Southworth, who with his wife and children, returned to Middleboro ca 1807.)
The remaining headstone was for "Miss Polly Ellis, daughter of George and Phebe Ellis, d. 29 Oct. 1810, age 33 yrs 1 mo 24 dys." George Ellis was s/o Matthias and grandson of Capt. Joel.
