This shows: John Ellsworth, age 26, sawmill operator, born in Canada. Ellen Ellsworth, age 24, born in Michigan and children Fernando Ellsworth, age 2 and Ida Ellsworth, age 6 mos, both born in Michigan.

Alpena County Clerk's Office unable to locate record of marriage but Certified Copy of Marriage from Michigan Department of Health records indicates in its return of marriages from the County of Alpena, quarter ending April 5, 1868, Record No. 11, the marriage of John Ellsworth age 33 and Ellen Lane age 20, his birthplace as Canada, occupation lumberman and her place of birth as just Michigan. The name of father of each has been omitted. The date of marriage is given as March 31, 1868 at Alpena, Michigan. This would make their first child born approximately two months after marriage.

Certified copy of record of Death No 161, State of Michigan, County of Alpena, for Ellen Ellsworth does not give names of her parents.

Certified copy of record of marriage No. 1896, State of Michigan, County of Alpena. John Ellsworth, age 64 and Mary A. Elliott or Mary A. Griffin, age 60, his occupation farmer, his father as Israel Ellsworth and mother Mary A. Gage. Her father Curtis Griffin and mother as Ester Mabee. Date of Marriage July 23, 1900, at Alpena, Michigan. Mary Ann Griffin Elliott had two sons by a previous marriage named John Elliott and William Elliott.

Certified copy of record of Death No. 173, State of Michigan, County of Alpena, for John Ells-
worth, died at Ossineke, Michigan, age 72 years 10 months 4 days. Parents names given as father Ellsworth and mother Share.

There is great disparity in the records regarding the parents of John Ellsworth and his brother Emanuel Ellsworth. John Ellsworth death certificate indicates his father as just Ellsworth and
mother as just Share. The marriage certificate of John Ellsworth to Mary A. Elliott/Griffin indicates his father as Israel Ellsworth and mother as Mary A. Gage. One of two death certificates issued for Emanuel Ellsworth indicates his father as Gerald Elsworth and mother as Mary A. Gage. It is my belief from the above that the correct parents of the two brothers in question is indeed Israel Ellsworth and May A. Gage. Do not let the similarity of Mary A. Gage or Mary A. Elliott/Griffin be confusing. They are two different persons having similar first names and
middle initials.

There had been much activity in Upper Canada during the McKenzie Rebellion. It was during this period that Israel Ellsworth left Canada for St Clair, Michigan area. He subsequently, during a safe period, returned to settle land records. It would appear that a low profile was being observed during this period and little correct information was made available for good and sufficient reasons. This plus persons giving incorrect information makes the records murky.

The History of the Hubbard Lake Methodist Church, by Mrs. Byron Coleman, notes on page 10 that John Ellsworth was one of the church signers of incorporation on December 3, 1901. Under membership, page 21, he recorded as such on date of July 24, 1895. His death is listed on page 21 as October 4, 1908, place of funeral Hubbard Lake, Minister John Trewartha.

The History of Hubbard Lake, by Lucille Schook's and Virginia Siegert, August 1983, indicates the following: The authors state that John Ellsworth first came to Alpena and later moved into the Ossineke area. He keeping an account book for settlers and lumbermen. John first spent much of his time in Ossineke, lumbering, building roads, bridges and surveying land.

He is reported as running a supply store while earning an average pay of $3.00 per day. He applied for a tract of land that was put on the market by the U. S. Government in 1862, for $1.25 an acre. He further received a homestead certificate, signed by president U. S. Grant, which along with the above mentioned account book were in the possession of Lucille [Ellsworth] Shooks now deceased as of 25 May 1993 @ Hubbard Lake, Alpena Co., Michigan.

The war between the states, known as the Civil War, found 30 sons from Alpena, Michigan area called to serve in the Union Army. John Ellsworth and his brother Robert Ellsworth were among those enlisting. A special tax election was held to raise $100.00 for each volunteer. Following the war John returned to Alpena in 1865. John Ellsworth, Co. G, 23rd Inf., and Robert H. Ellsworth, Co C, 27th Inf., both of Hubbard Lake, Michigan

John Ellsworth's first marriage was to Ellen Ann Lane on 31 March 1867, in Alpena, Michigan, by F. N. Barlow, Minister. She being a small, beautiful English girl.

The John Ellsworth family was the first to settle along the north end of Hubbard Lake following their arrival in 1869. He immediately built a log cabin. The first floor consisting of two rooms, the family and bedroom with a crude stairway to the upper loft. This structure serving them until 1878 when John built a larger two-story house with nine rooms. The property subsequently becoming the home of John's daughter Ida Isabelle Ellsworth and husband Lester William Ellsworth. We have made a further note as to the disposition of property following the death of Lester William Ellsworth since this family unit of mother and four children moved to Detroit, Wayne County, Michigan. Each of John's children were given a cash settlement for their interest in the property except for Charles Centennial Ellsworth who then became the owner of record. Ownership continued in the family with Charles's daughter Lucille May (Ellsworth) Schooks and Husband Clyde (Ellsworth) Schooks. This farm consisted of 120 acres and is located one mile west of the Hubbard Lake road on Scott road.

That in August 1883 the first mail was delivered to Hubbard Lake following John Ellsworth having applied to the United States Government for a Post Office. He being made Postmaster and using his home as the Post Office. Among the first officers in Ossineke Township, 1866, was Constable John Ellsworth. The office of Justice of the Peace was held by Samuel Ellsworth, in 1867 and by John Ellsworth in 1879. Samuel being John's brother. The Township records of Ossineke show John Ellsworth as the Treasurer in 1883.

John Ellsworth originally borrowed $43.00 to purchase plants and trees for Vineyard and Orchard. These being 104 Apple Trees, 2 Pear Trees, 3 Cherry Trees and 25 Grape Vines. In 1983 some of the Apples Trees were still standing. Due to the success of this venture he paid back the $43.00 within one year.

In 1877 his inventory consisted of: 1 Sleigh and team of horses, 1 1/2 year old steer and a spring calf, 2 tons of hay, 50 bushels of turnips, 1 cow, 2 pigs, 25 bushels of potatoes, and 175 bushels of rutabagas.

In 1890 John Ellsworth's account book showed the following production:53 bushels of spring wheat, 19 bushels of barley, 68 bushels of oats, 13 bushels of beans, 17 bushels of buckwheat, 150 bushels of potatoes, and 175 bushels of rutabagas.

A note of Historical information regarding the cemetery located just north and on west side of street from corner of Hubbard Lake, Michigan is that the sign indicates cemetery as HUBBARD LAKE CEMETERY, but was originally know as the Ossineke Township Cemetery, located in Section 28,
Town 29, North Range 7 East. The land sold to the Township on June 7 1902 for $35.00, by Eugene Wright. This reference from Hubbard Lake History, by Lucille Schooks and Virginia Siegert, August 1983.

BY: HISTORICAL COMMISSION, AREA FARM CITED FOR CENTENNIAL AWARD.

A farm owned by Mr. & Mrs. Clyde Schooks of Scott road, Hubbard Lake, has been designated as a Centennial Farm by the Michigan Historical Commission. The farm located in Ossineke Township, has been in the possession of the Schooks family since 1871. It was originally purchased in the spring of 1871 by John Ellsworth, grandfather of the present owners, from U.S. Government.

The Secretary of State Richard H. Austin, who heads the Michigan Department of State which directs activities of the Michigan Historical Commission, said the Centennial Farm program in Michigan was inaugurated in 1948. Since that time certificates and metal markers have been awarded to some 3000 Michigan farms.

The Historical Commission administers the program while the markers are provided by Detroit
Edison and Consumers Power Companies. Austin explains "a Centennial Farm is one which has been in the continious possession of the same family for 100 years or more." For selection purposes, the Historical Commission considers a farm to be 10 or more acres having estimated sales of more than $50.00 yearly, or less than 10 acres but having estimated sales of $250.00.

Any farm owner who wishes to apply for a Centennial Farm certificate is asked to write for an
application to: Michigan Historical Commission; Michigan Department of State; Lansing 48918.
